Is Your Domain Name As Local As You?

ESPN, CBS Sports and other large brands are buying up geodomains (ie. ESPNcityname.com). Large companies have finally started seeing the advantage of niching their offerings and brands down to where their markets are buying.
A sports fan is going to want national sports news–that’s a given, but he or she will still want to see games locally. For someone who is just slightly interested in a different sport say a basketball fan might want to catch a hockey game if his team isn’t playing on the same night. If he were to go to ESPN.com, he may not get enticed to go to the hockey game because of all the national sports news that competes for homepage space.
But if the fan goes to ESPN-his-town.com, he will probably see that the local hockey team is playing this week and it won’t interfere with his basketball obsession.
What does this have to do with you?
Local area small businesses should own at least one local URL to help with their online marketing efforts. I actually recommend you own a bunch and have a plan for rolling out new websites on those domain names over the course of a year. Some could be blogs on your industry, some could be events and news in your town and some could promote your business. And all of them would build your brand.
